Meta ads CPC too high: why clicks cost more and how to fix it
Troubleshooting guide · 2 min read · Updated 2026-10-21 · By the Cofoundr team
Cost per click depends on CPM and click-through rate: the same reach costs more per click when fewer people click. Check which kind of click you are measuring, because all clicks and link clicks differ. Then fix click-through rate first, with a stronger hook and offer, before changing audiences or bids.
People often compare cost per click across accounts that count clicks differently. Start by making sure you are reading the same metric, then find out whether CPM or click-through rate moved.
Which clicks are you counting?
- All clicks include reactions, profile clicks and other interactions.
- Link clicks are people who actually clicked through to the destination.
- Outbound clicks count those leaving Facebook's apps for your site.
- Use the same one when comparing accounts or time periods.
The relationship
Cost per click equals CPM divided by 1,000, then divided by click-through rate. A higher CPM or a lower click-through rate both raise it. Illustration with made-up numbers: at a CPM of 200, a 1 percent click rate means a click costs 20, and a 0.5 percent rate means 40.
If click-through rate fell
- The creative may be tired. See creative fatigue.
- For video, check hook rate. See hook rate and hold rate.
- Check whether the message still fits the audience.
If CPM rose
Reaching people costs more. See CPM too high.
When a cheap click is the wrong goal
A very low cost per click can mean curiosity clicks that never convert. Judge by cost per result, not cost per click. See spending but no conversions.
How Cofoundr helps
Cofoundr creative diagnostics show outbound click-through rate and conversion rate for the top ten ads by spend, with a plain diagnosis, so weak ads stand out. Reports show click-through rate and cost per result against the previous period.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my Facebook CPC so high?
Usually either CPM rose or click-through rate fell. Check which, then fix the cause.
What is the difference between CPC (all) and link click CPC?
All clicks include interactions that are not visits to your page. Link clicks count people who clicked through. Compare like with like.
Should I optimise for lowest CPC?
Not on its own. Cheap clicks can be low intent. Judge by cost per result.
