What to do when a client's Meta Ads results drop
Checklist · 2 min read · Updated 2026-10-06 · By the Cofoundr team
First confirm the drop is real and not a tracking or reporting delay. Then narrow it down from account to campaign to ad set to ad, check delivery, fatigue and the landing page, act on what you find, and tell the client early with a plan.
A sudden drop is stressful, and the worst response is a rushed change to everything at once. A fixed sequence keeps you calm, finds the cause faster, and gives you something useful to tell the client while you fix it.
1. Confirm it is real
- Check that tracking is firing and no events stopped.
- Allow for reporting delays, and compare like for like: the same attribution window and date range.
- Compare with the previous period and the same period last year, if there is seasonality.
2. Find where it started
Work downwards: account, campaign, ad set, ad. Note the date the numbers changed. The date usually points to a cause, such as a budget change, a new creative, an ad that was disapproved or a campaign that left its learning phase.
3. Check the usual suspects
- Delivery: spend dropped, ads rejected, payment failed, campaign stopped.
- Audience fatigue: frequency up while click-through falls.
- Creative: a top ad is tired, or hook rate and hold rate slipped.
- Budget and learning phase: a big edit may have reset learning.
- The landing page or offer: clicks look fine but conversions fell.
- The market: a sale, a competitor or a holiday.
4. Act on what you find
Fix the cause you can prove. Change one or two things at a time so you can tell what worked, and write down what you changed and why. Avoid panic edits to many ad sets at once.
5. Tell the client early
Send a short note before they ask. A simple structure works: what we saw, what we think caused it, what we have done, what we will do next and when you will update them. Clients trust agencies that raise problems themselves.
6. Follow up and learn
- Update the client on the date you promised, even if there is little to report.
- Add the finding to the client's record so the next person knows.
- Set an alert so you hear about the same problem faster next time.
Where Cofoundr helps
Cofoundr shows the health score of each account with the biggest driver of any change, flags wasted spend, alerts you when cost per result climbs and keeps a pause log and action history per client. You find the date and the cause faster, and your note to the client writes itself from the record.

How quickly should I tell the client?
As soon as you have confirmed the drop is real and have a first idea of the cause, usually the same day, even if the fix is still in progress.
Should I change the budget when results drop?
Not as a reflex. Find the cause first. Big budget changes can reset learning and make things worse.
How do I avoid being surprised next time?
Set alerts for cost per result and spend pace, review accounts daily by exception, and keep a record of changes per client.
