How to get access to a client's Facebook ad account
How-to guide · 2 min read · Updated 2026-10-21 · By the Cofoundr team
Ask the client to share the ad account, Page and pixel with your Business Manager ID as a partner, or send an access request from your own Business Settings. Give the client a short, exact list of what you need and check the access the same day.
Onboarding stalls most often at access. Clients are unsure what to share, send the wrong asset or offer a personal login. A clear request and a quick check solve most of it. Menu labels vary, so link clients to Meta's current help page alongside your own instructions.
Two ways to get access
- The client shares the asset with you: they add your business ID as a partner on the ad account, Page and pixel.
- You request access: in your own Business Settings, ask to access a client's ad account or Page using the ad account ID. The client then approves the request.
What to ask for
- The ad account, with permission to manage campaigns and see performance.
- The Facebook Page the ads run from.
- The pixel or dataset, so you can see and use conversion events.
- An Instagram account if ads run through it.
- Confirmation of who handles billing, and whether a payment method is already set.
A request you can paste
Send your Business Manager ID, the list above and one link to Meta's guide. Keep it to four or five lines. A client who has to guess what to do will delay it.
Check the access the same day
- Open Business Settings and confirm each asset shows under your accounts.
- Open the ad account and check you can see campaigns and results, not just the name.
- Confirm the pixel shows events and that the right domain is verified, if conversions matter.
- Note anything missing and ask for it straight away.
Common blockers
- The client shared with a person's email instead of your business ID. Ask them to share again with the ID.
- The client is not an admin of the business that owns the account. Ask who is.
- The ad account is restricted or disabled. Fix that first, using Meta's account quality tools.
- A previous agency still has full control. Agree a handover date and ask the client to remove them.
Keep a record
Note what access you were given, when, and who agreed it. When many accounts are involved this saves arguments and speeds up offboarding.
Once you have access
Add the accounts to one view so nothing waits for a manual check. Cofoundr connects through Meta's standard login and shows every client account together. Follow the client onboarding checklist for the rest. Meta's own steps are on its partner access help page.
Frequently asked questions
How do I get access to a client's Facebook ad account?
Ask them to add your Business Manager ID as a partner on the ad account, Page and pixel, or request access from your Business Settings and have them approve it.
Do I need the client's password?
No. Partner access means you never need their personal login.
Why can't I see the ad account after the client shared it?
Often it was shared to a person instead of your business ID, or the share is not accepted yet. Check Business Settings and ask the client to share again with the ID.
What permission level do I need?
Enough to manage campaigns and view performance. Confirm billing arrangements separately.
